In Memoriam:
The Loves We’ve Lost

If you’ve known the love of an animal, then you’ll always remember them with a kind of awe for what they’ve taught you. Each of our relationships with the animals is unique. And even though we know we started with so many wonderfully senior alpaca and are providing a sanctuary space for all to live out their remaining days, it still hits us to our core when an animal passes away. But over time, we recognize that the pain is a small price to pay for the gift of being with each of these amazing creatures. We always want to remember those we have been lucky enough to have loved.

  • Spanky the Cat at Paws for Humanity

    Spanky

A bit of a loner, Spanky took up residence in our back barn and never left. He kept the horses, donkeys and alpaca entertained by his small size and his somewhat wily ways. He was quite fond of the occasional snuggle with a willing human.

  • Samantha

Just look in those eyes. A sweet girl, Samantha’s only fault was how much she loved stepping both feet into the clean water buckets on a hot day (much to the chagrin of those who just changed the water). A soft, gentle spirit, she was BFFs with Tamara. They were rarely seen without the other.

  • Samson

Samson was a champion. You could tell just by looking at him. He had a regality that did not fade with age. Tall and handsome, Samson loved hanging around with Roy - his herd mate of many years. His favorite time was mealtime. Our favorite time was just being around him.

  • Max

While very regal, Max always looked like he was wearing pajamas. Unlike most chickens, he loved to be held and was one super friendly guy.

  • Tamara

It was rare to catch Tamara without hay in her mouth. She had an adorable personality, was shorter than all the others, and would always sidle up next to you for a rub on the back. She enjoyed the company of humans almost as much as she enjoyed Samantha’s.

  • Donald

The patriarch of all the ladies and the biggest duck on the farm, Donald was a perfect specimen of his breed - Peking Duck. He was protective of his flock, yet loved to be with everyone.

  • Popei

Popei made living with one leg look pretty easy. He was happiest when he was swimming in our pond. His handicap only made him more endearing to everyone around him.

  • Hawkeye

With an uncanny resemblance to Keith Richards, Hawkeye was one of the younger alpacas on our farm when we got here at 14. He was the most social of the herd, and definitely a leader. He was also calm, and welcomed new people to the barn with an unparalleled graciousness.

  • Coco

Coco was 22 when we met her, and as Paws came to life, so did her social side. She would saunter up to everybody, curious to see if they had treats or just to enjoy the spectacle of these people wandering around her yard. She was a beauty to behold.

  • Pandora

Pandora was the reigning Alpha Queen when she was with us. She spent her time keeping the herd in line and making sure everyone was taken care of.

  • Arturo

One handsome fellow (well maybe not completely in this photo), Arturo loved to play with his people and his herd. He was a ham that was always fun to be around and watch.

  • Scooter

Scooter was our Mod guy! He lost an eye due to an infection when he was young, so we kept him looking glam with a cool haircut. He’s was a sweet, timid boy, who liked to take naps in the sun - and never left his BFF Arturo’s side.
